Who's Driving?
The band chooses a leader and gets a gig
Thursday, November 15 2001, 04:35 PM

We practiced on November 7, but I didn’t get back to the KrakaTome until now. That’s because there wasn’t a whole lot to report last time. We’ve re-adopted an old practice structure we used to use. Specifically, we take turns as “practice leaders.” It’s not because we’re all power-hungry megalomaniacs who lust for control over the band. It’s just that practice seems to run more efficiently when there’s one person calling out songs to work on. Otherwise we spend half the night staring at each other waiting for someone else to make a suggestion. This way is much better. Last week, Richard led us through a fairly standard practice. We worked on songs. It was a week ago, whaddya want?

At that practice, I also mentioned that the host of the party we played at in April (let’s call him…Tim) was planning to have another party at some unspecified date. So we might have another gig. A few days later, “Tim” decided he was having the party on November 17. Fortunately, he decided that was a little too soon (from the standpoint of the band and our current preparedness to perform, I would have to agree), so now the party is December 1. Which gives us more time to prepare. Just enough, I suspect.

We knew about the date when we met last night to rock the KrakaTomb. I was almost immediately blindsided with a nomination to lead, but I recovered. We warmed up, then spent quite a while working on a couple of new songs of Jeremy’s. They don’t have official titles yet, but they do have lyrics and bridges and beginnings and endings, so there’s that. We’re referring to them informally as “Frog” and “Waitress.” The latter is sort of a retro-fifties kind of thing that I’ve mentioned before. I don’t know how to describe “Frog,” other than to say it’s nifty. Anyway, we worked on those and “Revolution Day.” Richard says we’re getting closer to his “vision” of that song, so that’s a good thing. The Poignant Song Without Words is still a song without words, but we went through it anyway. We’re hoping to have lyrics for it soon so we can play it at the party. Depending on how things go next practice, we may have as many as four new songs to debut. Plus one new cover. All of which we may or may not actually debut. You’ll just have to wait and see. But that’s okay, because we will too.

We’re taking next week off for the holiday, but then we’ll be back for practice and performance the following week.
